Megamind

Megamind

A Film Review By: David Ramirez

★★.5/★★★★

In a year full of classic family movies we have another one that we would think would easily be added to that list. Sadly I have to report that "Megamind" will not be added to the list of family classics. It has a lot of heart and try’s it best to be an action-family-comedy but it really doesn't do the job.

Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and David Cross all lend their voice talents to "Megamind".  The voice acting is for the most part good and I must give extra credit to David Cross, who as the Fish with a gorilla robot body minion was a very big surprise. Cross brought a lot of emotion and comedy to his character and the entire film.

Will Ferrell supplies the voice for the super villain Megamind, who despite his best efforts can never succeed at any of his evil plans. Will Fellell is a very talented comedian and try’s his best to bring his comedic talent to the voice work in the film, but falls short. The reason Will Ferrell falls short is not because he can’t do family comedies, he has proven to us that he can. But in this case he try’s much too hard to be funny and serious at the same time. He does come off as funny sometimes but other times he comes across as down right depressing. Another issue I had was that some of the things he does in the movie feel like things I have seen him do in the past and have lost there appeal. Ferrell delivers some tired impressions and emotions that are much to heavy for a animated/action/comedy.

Brad Pitt makes the shortest appearance in the film, but the little time he does spend on screen is a true joy. He gives the stereotypical super hero voice; loud, booming and in this case it works great coming from Brad Pitt. Tina Fey is well just Tina Fey, nothing overly special about her performance but she does come across as a new generation Louis Lane.  Jonah Hill will give you some good laughs as the "love struck" camera man, but has he gets his own super powers and become a villain he is not as convincing.

In the end Megamind gives us some good laughs and the kids will love it, but as an adult you will leave feeling a bit disappointed. One major reason for the disappointment is the very sad turn the movie takes and the tired jokes from Will Ferrell.  The animation in the film is very good and the jokes can be funny but sometime’s come across as very tired. Megamind try’s way to hard to be something it’s not, rather then what it is.
